Introducing the Amazon Kindle Singles! (eBooks, not songs!)

January 27, 2011 1 comment

Will this idea fly? I like Engadget.Com‘s description of the Kindle Single: “Amazon’s really, really short books for people with short attentions spans — have finally gone live.” LOL

I prefer my short stories collected together, thank you very much (Kinda like this EXCELLENT ’20th Century Ghosts’ by Joe Hill discounted to just $0.99!) But for those of you who’d like to look more into the Amazon Singles, head on over to the official Kindle Singles Editors’ Picks page!

They’ve already singled-out two authors for special mention: Jodi Picoult’s Leaving Home ($2.99) and Anand Giridharadas’s Chinese Dreams ($2.99).

Personally I think it’s overpriced coz I’m not paying $2.99 for short stories (maybe I’ll go for $0.50-$0.99), when there are so many good full-length books out there that go for the same price.

Weekly Meme: WWW Wednesdays (Jan 26)

January 26, 2011 17 comments

Thought I’d play along with this weekly meme WWW Wednesdays (via the Should Be Reading blog) where I answer three (3) questions:

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading Paul of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

I received a copy as a gift last Christmas (I’m a known SciFi and Dune fan), and I finally managed to squeeze it in my TBR pile. I loved Frank Herbert’s magnum opus Dune and Dune Messiah, but the events in those two books were separated by a decade. Paul of Dune is supposed to bridge that time gap and give fans more info about the bloody Jihad that swept the galaxy.

What did you recently finish reading?

I actually re-read my copies of Frank Herbert’s Dune and Dune Messiah over the holidays.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read them, so I wanted to be sure about the characters and events, before I went ahead and read Paul of Dune. Usually, I’m disappointed when I re-read a book I raved over when I was a kid, but Frank Herbert’s writing and imagination is as exceptional now as it was the first time I read him. Total genius!

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’m planning to read The City of Ember (The First Book of Ember) by Jeanne DuPrau. I’d read a marvelous review of this YA dystopic future story about two teens on a race to save their dying underground city via Anastacia’s Birdbrain(ed) Book Blog, so I’ve added that to my TBR pile!

Alone (Detective D. D. Warren Series #1) by Lisa Gardner for $0.99 (Thriller).

Product Description:

BONUS: This edition includes the full text of the novel plus the following content:

– Lisa Gardner on Detective D.D. Warren: Who was the inspiration for D.D. Warren? Find out in this essay.
– An excerpt from Lisa Gardner’s Love You More.

Alone . . . Massachusetts State Trooper Bobby Dodge watches a tense hostage standoff unfold through the scope of his sniper rifle. Just across the street, in wealthy Back Bay, Boston, an armed man has barricaded himself with his wife and child. The man’s finger tightens on the trigger and Dodge has only a split second to react . . . and forever pay the consequences.

Alone . . . that’s where the nightmare began for cool, beautiful, and dangerously sexy Catherine Rose Gagnon. Twenty-five years ago, she was buried underground during a month-long nightmare of abduction and abuse. Now her husband has just been killed. Her father-in-law, the powerful Judge Gagnon, blames Catherine for his son’s death . . . and for the series of unexplained illnesses that have sent her own young son repeatedly to the hospital.

Alone . . . a madman survived solitary confinement in a maximum security prison where he’d done hard time for the most sadistic of crimes. Now he walks the streets a free man, invisible, anonymous . . . and filled with an unquenchable rage for vengeance. What brings them together is a moment of violence—but what connects them is a passion far deeper and much more dangerous. For a killer is loose who’s woven such an intricate web of evil that no one is above suspicion, no one is beyond harm, and no one will see death coming until it has them cornered, helpless, and alone.
